Thanksgiving Triple-Header 2017

Hey, all Happy Thanksgiving Day. I know it's celebrated in America but the NFL has the biggest day of the season until the Super Bowl with 3 games in one day. Yes, 3 matches and a tradition that started since the 1930's when Detroit was given an opportunity to play a game on Thanksgiving Day by a local NBC radio station to the whole country and it carried onto the onset of world war II and after the war was over Detroit was given annual games. In 1966 the Dallas Cowboys wanted a spot on Thanksgiving day to try and get as many fans into their stadium as they couldn't fill the stadium on a Sunday. They held it until 1975 when the game was given to the St Louis (now Arizona) Cardinals. In 2006 the NFL added a third game which has become a big success and this has been the format for the last decade. All three games are covered by three of the NFL's biggest network partners, Fox Sports, CBS, and NBC with their number one commentary team and the pregame halftime and post-game shows live pitchside like they would when they cover the Super Bowl.

The first game is the Detroit Lions playing at home to the Minnesota Vikings. The Lions and Vikings game is not just any divisional rivalry but is key for both teams. The Vikings need to win to keep in touch with the Philadelphia Eagles and the Lions need to win to keep their faint playoff hopes alive for one more week. The latter scenario is a tough one because the Vikings aren't just a decent team, they have the NFL's top-ranked defence and an offence to match even though it isn't as high as its defence but it is ranked as an offence to threaten teams. The Lions, however, have been one of the most confusing teams of the whole season. The team have been looking to be one of the top tier teams and decided to show that by giving Matthew Stafford a massive contract for the next six years but so far has not failed but struggling to meet expectations. This is a big match not just for the two teams but also to see who is the best team in the division at the expense of a weakened Green Bay Packers.

The second game is the Dallas Cowboys against the LA Chargers. The 2017 season has been tough for the Dallas Cowboys with their star running back Ezekiel Elliot being caught in a legal battle with the NFL over his 6 game appeal over domestic violence allegations when Elliot was playing for Ohio State University. He spent the first half of the season appealing through district courts but recently decided to drop it because by the time the appeal would be heard he would have missed 4 games. Instead, this is the third game of his suspension and the Cowboys look to be in trouble with divisional rival Philadelphia running away as not just the best team in the NFC but the whole NFL. Also, Dallas is looking to improve their Sunday night performance which had them leading the Eagles 9-7 at halftime and then lose it 37-9. For the Chargers, it has been a season to forget in their first season in LA compared to their in-house rivals the Rams. The Chargers are looking to defeat the Cowboys and make it a happy couple of days for their fans after a dominant defensive performance at home to the Buffalo Bills.

The last game is another divisional rivalry in the Washington Redskins against the New York Giants. The matchup is a chance to see how these two play for their futures looking to 2018 after an appalling 2017 season in comparison to the Eagles. The Giants which last year got defeated by Aaron Rodgers Green Bay in the wildcard of the playoffs are now looking at being in the top 5 of next years NFL Draft. Meanwhile, the Redskins are also trying to keep their slim playoff hopes alive for another week but being in the same division as the Eagles it's a very tough job for the Redskins especially as they have to catch up with the Cowboys so unless Dallas loses all their games and the rest of the NFC lose enough matches then the Redskins still can make the playoffs.

I hope you have enjoyed this and all I want to say is Happy Thanksgiving day everyone.

KRO Mark
