A game worthy of a Rocky story as the Eagles defeat the Patriots

Hey, all what a night in America and what a shock. The Super Bowl last night was titled "the underdogs vs the dynasty". The underdogs were the Philadelphia Eagles who last won a championship in 1960 six years before the Super Bowl started and then went to two Super Bowls and lost them both one to the Oakland Raiders the second was the Patriots 13 years ago. The dynasty was the New England Patriots. If they won, it would have been their 3rd Super Bowl in 4 years. The Eagles despite being the top team in the NFC they were underdogs for all three playoff games they played in, but on their way to the playoffs. They beat last years runners-up Atlanta in a close match and then in the championship game they tore the NFL's top defence apart in a blowout victory.
Meanwhile, the Patriots road to the Super Bowl started off with a painful opening night defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs and their defence being ranked near the bottom of the rankings to beating the race for the number one team in the AFC against the Pittsburgh Steelers. After that they had to face two teams who haven't been to the playoffs for a decade on their way to the game, the first game was a dominant victory over the Tennessee Titans. In the championship game, they did a comeback victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars to take them to the Patriots' 10th Super Bowl and 8th in the Brady/Belichick era.

The matchup was also about the two different quarterbacks. Patriots quarterback is Hall of Fame guarantee Tom Brady and the Eagles quarterback is Nick Foles who came in replacing injured MVP candidate Carson Wentz in week 15 of the regular season. This was not the first time Foles replaced an injured quarterback, 4 years ago again at the Eagles he replaced Michael Vick and led the Eagles to the playoffs where they got knocked out by the Saints. He then got traded to St Louis but didn't work. After the Rams moved from St Louis to Los Angeles in 2016, he almost retired from the sport after they released him to make way for rookie Jared Goff. However, he got bought by Kansas, and it restarted his love for the game and then got brought back by the Eagles as an experienced backup which helped the team as it became clear in the regular season. There was also a significant international presence with Jay Ajayi being born and raised in London in his third season as an NFL player and was acquired by the Eagles in a trade during the season. Another factor for the Eagles was that two of their players LeGarrette Blount and Chris Long played for the Patriots last year, so they knew how to beat the Patriots.

Luckily the game was in an indoor stadium as the temperature outside the stadium was -21 C. Usually with a Super Bowl they get two big music stars. For the National Anthem, it was performed by P!nk and the Halftime show which is the most significant performance of the whole year with millions tuning in to watch the game was given to Justin Timberlake performing his third Halftime show.
The Eagles started the game after the Patriots decided to receive the kickoff in the second half. They took advantage of this and drove down the field to get a field goal in 14 plays taking nearly 8 minutes off the clock which became the start of what was about to be seen for the whole game. New England then responded with a drive of their own and got the same results to make it 3-3. The next drive was the first touchdown of the game with the Eagles scoring within three plays by Alshon Jefferey on a 34-yard play but missed the point extra to make it 9-3. When the Patriots got the ball back, they finished off the quarter within striking range of a touchdown.

The Second quarter ended being a relief for the Eagles as they held the Patriots to a field goal which was missed by a lousy snap causing chaos in which Gostowski missed by hitting the goal post. The next drive was what would turn out to be the only defensive stop of the whole game by the Patriots team as they forced the Eagles to punt. On the next drive the Patriots did a 23-yard pass but the receiver Brandin Cooks got hit on the helmet by defender Malcolm Jenkins and was ruled out of the game with a concussion. Then on a crucial third-down, the Patriots tried a trick play which nearly paid off when they did a pass from Danny Amendola to Tom Brady, but it fell short as it hit Brady's hands fell to the ground incomplete. On the fourth down after that, they went for it but the pass to Rob Gronkowski, Brady's primary passing target, was again incomplete which gave the ball to the Eagles on their 35-yard line. The Eagles capitalized on their next drive with two big passes of 19-yards and 22-yards and finished off by a 21-yard run for a LeGarrette Blount touchdown and a two-point conversion to make it 15-3. The Patriots then did a quick strike to take the ball down to field goal range and converted the kick to make it 15-6 with 7 minutes left in half. The next drive for the Eagles looked like it was going to be repeated however Foles's pass to Jefferey was stolen by New England defender Duron Harmon. The Patriots took advantage with a 7 play drive down to score a touchdown featuring a 43-yard pass and a 26-yard touchdown run by last year's hero James White, but another missed kick made it 15-12. The next drive ended up being big because the Eagles drove down the field again to the one-yard line and then the Eagles did the same play as the Patriots used earlier in the quarter and executed it entirely for a touchdown to make it 22-12 for a 10 point lead at halftime.

After Justin Timberlake's Halftime show. The game went back with the questions being asked whether the Eagles could hang on to the win or will there be a repeat of last years match. The Patriots first possession of the second half ended up being a touchdown with Gronkowski dominating the drive and catching a 5-yard touchdown to make it 22-19. The Eagles then drive down the field with an eleven play drive taking 5 minutes of the clock and the first of the controversial touchdowns as the pass was completed at the back of the end zone and the rule is that both feet have to stay on the pitch. The officials gave them the touchdown to make it 29-19. The Patriots then went down to respond with a touchdown of their own in 10 plays to make it 29-26. The Eagles ended the third quarter on the Patriots 16 yard line.

The fourth quarter started with a field goal to make it 32-26. The Patriots then responded with a touchdown drive to give the Patriots their first lead of the game to make it 32-33. The Eagles had the biggest drive of their game which was the drive to cement their determination to win the Super Bowl with two big 3rd downplays and a 4th down to keep Brady off the field and threw the touchdown pass to Zach Ertz with 2:21 left on the clock. They went for a two-point attempt to make it a 7 point lead which didn't work leaving it 38-33. The next drive was meant to be the Patriots swansong to win the match, but on the second play, the Eagles sacked Brady and caused a fumble recovered by the Eagles. They couldn't get another touchdown but ended up getting a field goal which meant the Patriots had to get a touchdown and 2 points to take the game to overtime again. The Patriots tried going for the win and ended up going for a gamble Hail Mary pass which was incomplete, and the clock hit zero giving the victory to the Eagles.

The game was being the highest ever total yard game not just in playoff history but in all of the NFL games with 1,152 offensive yards and the 2nd highest scoring Super Bowl. There was also the fewest punts of the whole game in Super Bowl history with one punt, the most yards by a team and the highest points by a losing team.

The Eagles won their first-ever Super Bowl and their first championship-winning season since 1960, six years before the Super Bowl started. The Most Valuable Player went to Nick Foles with 28 complete passes from 43 attempts with 373 yards and 3 touchdown passes and a receiving touchdown, with one interception. This ended up being the final game of the 2017 NFL season, and it won't be until September until the next regular-season game.

I hope you all enjoyed it.
