2018 NFL Draft review as 5 quarterbacks are drafted in the first round for the first time since 1999

Hey, all sorry I haven't been posting for a while. But too many events in the sporting world putting the blogs off and not picking which games to write about. I'm back, and I promise there will be more posts coming up soon. So I'm starting with events across the pond in AT&T Stadium in Arlington Texas home to the Dallas Cowboys who were hosting this year's draft. This is the first year that Dallas would be hosting the NFL Draft. If you're reading names like Alabama and UCLA, those are colleges in America which players are being picked from. I will be doing it from 1-8 9-16 17-24 and 25-32.

It's been two months since the Philadelphia Eagles defeating the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl. But since it has been headlined galore with Free-Agency, which is where the Super Stars like Dez Bryant and Richard Sherman being released by their teams and going to different teams on multiple-year deals for millions of dollars. But during this time teams are also looking into a talent pool for new superstars who would be cheaper compared to free agency. That talent pool is the thousands of college players becoming eligible to play in the NFL. The players are coming out of the different colleges around the countries from so-called football factories or top teams like Alabama, Miami University, University of Southern California (USC), Ohio State and Michigan. To make the teams pick the players, the NFL has an annual draft in which the teams look at the players they are interested in and how they could fit in the team. I know what you are thinking, how does it work? Why does the NFL use it? Also, does it find successful players?

Firstly how does it work? There are seven rounds and 256 picks which are split between the 32 teams. They all have one pick per round and compensatory picks, if teams don't like the position, they're in and want to snatch a player before the opponents they do tend to make trades to either move up or down in exchange for picks in the same draft or future drafts. It works on a reverse basis so the team with the worst record last season get the shot to pick the first player and could influence the whole draft, this year it's the Cleveland Browns, and the Super Bowl champions pick last in each round so the Eagles would get the last pick in this year's draft. Secondly, why use it. Well, unlike Formula One, where the most prize money goes to the team with the most points. Which creates a divide in terms of money building the distant competitive edge, in the NFL with it role reversal it's designed to make the worst teams get better either in that year or as teams would often do use it to build a team for success in three or four years away. So the teams at the bottom like the Cleveland Browns and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers can use the draft to make themselves more competitive. Lastly, does it find successful players? Yes, it does because teams are finding Hall of Fame players or potential future Hall of Famers in the same draft class. One example is the 1974 Pittsburgh Steelers, in a year where 5 players from that draft have been inducted into the Hall of Fame. 4 of them were drafted by the Steelers which took them from contenders, into a dynasty in which they won four Super Bowls. Starting off with winning their first one at the end of that season.

The stories at the start of the day were of Josh Allen's tweets when he was15 years old which were seen as racist when but it looked like it might not because they always vet players before picking them. Vet means looking through their past history on and off the field. The most popular area for debate is the quarterback with Josh Allen, Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen and Baker Mayfield with unique strengths and weaknesses which count each other out in this year's class. Cleveland would be the team to watch because they have the first and fourth pick, which would be the premier picks.

Cleveland started the draft by picking quarterback Baker Mayfield of Oklahoma who was the best college player last year. The next pick was the New York Giants who added running back Saquon Barkley of Penn State to add to their potent offence with Eli Manning and Odell Beckham Junior. The New York Jets were up with the third pick, and they took the best quarterback in the whole draft with Sam Darnold to be in contention with New England who plays in their division. Cleveland was back on the clock and got Defensive Back Denzel Ward of the Ohio State to be a need for their defence. The next team was the Bronco's who were looking to get a player to help with their defence and got Defensive End Bradley Chubb of NC (North Carolina) State. The next pick was the Indianapolis Colts who had a rough offseason with their favourite candidate for Head Coach staying at the team he was previously coaching at and issues over Andrew Luck's health, and they selected Guard Quenton Nelson to protect Luck. The next pick was the Bills trading for the 7th pick for the two second-round picks to get Josh Allen of Wyoming. Next up was the Chicago Bears and they got linebacker Roquan Smith of Georgia to help their defence.

The next team-up was the San Francisco 49ers. They selected Tackle Mike McGlinchey of Notre Dame to help protect Jimmy Garoppolo. Next up was the Arizona Cardinals who took the pick from the Oakland Raiders with trading the 3rd and 5th round picks to take Josh Rosen from UCLA (University of California Los Angeles) to back up Sam Bradford and replace the retiring Carson Palmer. Next up was the Miami Dolphins who selected Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick from National Champions Alabama to get their defence settled. Next up was the Buccaneers who selected Defensive Tackle Vita Vea of Washington who now had a tight defensive line. Next up was another Washington, this time the Redskins and they picked defensive tackle Da'Ron Payne of Alabama. Next up was the New Orleans Saints who traded, to get the pick from the Green Bay Packers for the 27th Overall pick this year a 5th Round picks and next years 1st round pick for Defensive End Marcus Davenport from UTSA (University of Texas-San Antonio). This was to add a vital piece to their top-end defence. Next up was the Oakland Raiders who have started a second stint with Head coach John Gruden who left them in 2002 and they selected Tackle Kolton Miller from UCLA to protect Derek Carr. Next up was the Buffalo Bills who traded to get the 16th pick and the Ravens got the 22nd pick and a third-round pick, and they selected Linebacker Tremaine Edmunds from Virginia Tech.

The next was the LA Chargers, and they selected Safety Derwin James from Florida State University. Next up was supposed to be the Seahawks but the shock was that the Packers came in with a trade for the 18th pick giving them the 27th pick that they already got from the Saints and their 3rd round pick in return for a 7th round pick and they got defensive back, Jaire Alexander, from Louisville (Kentucky). The next team-up was the Dallas Cowboys who selected linebacker Leighton Vander-Esch from Boise State as a replacement for injury-prone Sean Lee. Then the big headline of the night came in when the Steelers traded Wide Reciever Martavius Bryant to Oakland for a 3rd Round pick. Next up was the Detriot Lions who had a new head coach in the former Defensive Coordinator of New England Patriots' Matt Patricia. They selected Centre Frank Ragnow from Arkansas. Next up was the Cincinnati Bengals who picked the Ohio State centre Billy Price. Next up was supposed to be the Ravens but they traded it to the Tennessee Titans.who get the 22nd pick, and 6th round picks, and the Ravens get the 25th pick and a 4th round pick. The Titans select linebacker Rashaan Evans from Alabama. Next up was the New England Patriots and they selected Tackle Isaiah Wynn from Georgia to replace Nate Solder who left the team in free agency. Next up is the Carolina Panthers and they went for Wide Reciever D.J. Moore from Maryland.

Next up was the Baltimore Ravens and they selected Tight End Hayden Hurst from South Carolina. Next up was the Atlanta Falcons and they were looking to improve their receiving corps, and they chose Calvin Ridley from Alabama after they lost a severe threat. Up next was the 27th pick with the Seahawks and they went running back to help out Russell Wilson with selecting Rashaad Penny from San Diego State. Next up was the Pittsburgh Steelers and making the announcement was Ryan Shazier who suffered a horrible neck injury at the end of last season. They selected Safety Terrell Edmunds from Virginia Tech to help the Pittsburgh defensive backs. Next up was the surprise team of last year the Jacksonville Jaguars and they decided Defensive tackle Taven Bryan from Florida. Up next was the Minnesota Vikings and helped their defensive backs with Mike Hughes from UCF (University of Central Florida). Up next was the Patriots who selected Running Back Sony Michel in Georgia. The last pick was meant to be the Eagles. However, they traded the pick to the Ravens and selected quarterback Lamar Jackson from Louisville.
