England are in a 3rd semi final in a year!!!! This time it's the Lionesses

What a night in Le Havre. England's Lionesses took on 1995 World Cup Winners Norway with a semi-final against either the hosts France or USA in Lyon on the line. The last time these two played in the World Cup was at the last 16, 4 years ago in Canada. The country's gone crazy for the women's world cup with England's performances even Glastonbury was showing the match live because of Georgia Stanway's brother being at the festival and Stanway putting in a Twitter appeal. The one change for England was Demi Stokes for Alex Greenwood. That was good because they were concerned about the fitness of their centre backs Steph Houghton and Millie Bright and also having to deal with a virus in the England camp. One of the big headlines was Jill Scott tying Peter Shilton's record of caps for England, a record that stood for 30 years.

England scored in the 3rd minute courtesy of Jill Scott after Ellen White dummied the ball. It was England's fastest ever World Cup goal.  England was having trouble with possession with some bad passes. England nearly made it 2-0 when Nikita Parris just sailed her shot over the bar in the 20th minute. Ellen White had a chance in the 29th minute went for power, just hit the far post. England made it 2-0 thanks to Parris assisting Ellen White. However, Fran Kirby went down with an injury. Scott nearly made it 3-0 on the stroke of halftime but her attempt couldn't be guided into the goal.

England survived a scare at the start but Steph Houghton saved England's skin at the last moment. England substituted Toni Duggan for Beth Mead. England made it 3 after Lucy Bronze hit a peach from Mead's free kick. Norway nearly scored, however, Houghton cleared the ball off the goal line and nearly put Englands sloppy defending to dividends. Stanway was subbed on for Fran Kirby with 15 minutes to go. There was a concern for Ellen White as she took a nasty blow while going for a cross and colliding with the goalkeeper.
Ellen White is now joint top scorer.
England got a penalty after Houghton got pushed in the back. Nikita Parris stepped up to take the penalty and she had it saved by the goalkeeper as the keeper went the right way. That was her last major action as she was subbed off for Rachel Daly. Stanway tried for a 4th but the ball sailed wide left. At full time it was concluded as a good England beating Norway not the opposite way around.

England will have to wait until tomorrow to see who they have in the semi-final. Their semi-final is on Tuesday night. And it's either USA or hosts France and they both are confident of winning the game.

Back with more.

KRO Mark.
