What a day!! Hamilton wins, 5 set thriller and World Champions.

Sunday was chaotic for British sport as three events dominated the TV channels with England taking on New Zealand in the Cricket World Cup Final at Lords, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer battling out to win Wimbledon and at Silverstone, the British Grand Prix was taking place, all in the space of 9 hours.

For over a month England has been hosting the ICC One Day World Cup and they took on 9 teams including Australia, South Africa and India. England came in as favourites as being the most dominant team in the last 4 years after getting humiliated in Australia. However, they were almost knocked out in the group stage and had to win their last 2 games to qualify for the semifinals. They then defeated the 5 time World Champions Australia at Edgbaston in the semi-final after crushing them by 8 wickets to spare. New Zealand started their innings off well getting up to 103-1 after 22 overs however by the 40th over it went to 180-5. England kept the pressure up and limited New Zealand to 241-8 and left England chasing for 242 runs.

England lost Jason Roy on 28-1 after 5 overs then the pace had slowed down scoring 14 runs in 8 overs. But Jonny Bairstow picked up the pace in the next three overs. Meanwhile, New Zealand was battling and took 3 major wickets with Bairstow, Root and Morgan making it 86-4. However, Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes were putting England within a shot of winning the tournament. However, Buttler lost his wicket along with Woakes. It was down to Stokes. After Plunkett went out England's new golden boy came out. Stokes thought he was out but Boult stepped on the boundary which made it six runs. It went down to the final ball of the match with England needing two runs. It went to a Super Over or a Penalty shootout. England went out first with Stokes and Buttler with Boult bowling. They scored 15 runs, which meant New Zealand needed 16 and England's owler was the young Jofra Archer. It went down to the final ball of the Super Over. England won after Buttler ran Guptil out. Ben Stokes won the Man of the Match after his 84 not out innings performance. New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the player of the tournament.
Winning moment

Also for the last 2 weeks, one of Tennis' biggest tournaments was taking place. The 3rd tennis major of the year at Wimbledon was going on with major headlines like Andy Murray playing mixed doubles with Serena Williams and the story of 15-year-old Coco Gauff getting to the 4th round defeating former champion Venus Williams along the way. After Simone Halep won the women's tournament it was now the time of the men with two of the best players of this generation in for one more battle on Wimbledon's famous Centre Court.

Both players couldn't be separated during the first set as they were trading games and they ended up having to go to a tiebreak. Djokovic took it in the tiebreak 7-6. Federer made light work in the next set and took the second set 6-1. The 3rd set went just like the first set as they went to a tiebreak despite Federer being on set point. Djokovic fought hard and won the third set but had to battle back a comeback by Federer. During the 4th set, Federer was showing his resiliency as he took the lead of the 4th set and was looking to take it into a 5th set. And he did winning the set 6-4. The 5th was going Djokovic's way but Federer was showing his resiliency again and every game he was winning he was getting standing ovations. It was becoming a Wimbledon classic with reminders of Federer/Nadal 2008 being mentioned. It went to a tie-break at 12-12. Djokovic won it on the tiebreaker to win Wimbledon 7-6(7-5) 1-6 7-6(7-4) 4-6 12-12(7-3).

Hamilton with his 6th win at Silverstone
And if London was mad, up the M1 one of the fastest sports had landed. Yes, the travelling circus that is F1 has returned to Britain's shores. Despite a preview for a new battle between Hamilton and Vettel, it's been Hamilton leading the Championship. However his teammate Valterri Bottas secured pole position by 6 thousandths of a second. Hamilton was also chasing history as he was tied with Jim Clark and Alain Prost in the number of wins at the British Grand Prix. Even with the other major events today Silverstone still sold out all of their tickets with 140,000 turning up.

On lap 4 Hamilton and Bottas changed the lead both times down the old start-finish straight. The first retirements were both of the Haas drivers. Lap 20 had a safety car after Antonio Giovanazzi went out. After that Gasly and LeClerc fought it out and nearly collided with each other. Then on lap 38 Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel crashed into Luffield. Vettel was punished with a 10 second time penalty as well as being a lap down. Hamilton ended with making history by being the first-ever driver to win 6 times at the British Grand Prix and taking the fastest lap to end the race. Vettel saw Verstappen at the end of the race and apologised which Max accepted without throwing punches.
The aftermath of Vettel and Verstappen crash.

Like the headline says what a day. Wimbledon and Lords producing classics in their sports and Silverstone having played host to the fastest cars on the planet. Granted the F1 will get lost in the news shuffle but with another big event next weekend with The Open at Royal Portrush it's putting the best of British sport on newswires around the world. Back with more soon.
