Return of the Premier League
On Wednesday night after 3 months away the Premier League resumes it's 2019-2020 season. After the cancellations of the Scottish, French and Dutch leagues, questions were being asked about whether the big leagues in Europe like La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A and the Premier League would play the rest of the season. Well at the beginning of the month they announced their decision. The first matches that took place on Wednesday night were Aston Villa vs Sheffield United and Manchester City vs Arsenal. The reason why the Premier League started with those matches was that Villa and City were playing in the Carabao Cup Final and had a game in hand, so they decided to play them first so that everyone was back to the same number of games to play in the season.
Before kickoff for both games and for the next round of games, there will be a minute of silence for all of the people that have died during the Covid-19 Pandemic and take a knee for the Black Lives Matter.
The first game at Villa Park wasn't an entertaining match to get the audience. However, there was controversy at the stroke of halftime as Sheffield had a free kick sent in by Oliver Norwood, and it looked like the ball was near the goal line. And referee Michael Oliver said no goal because he couldn't see the ball cross the line and goal-line technology said no because his watch didn't buzz. However, a question that got asked why was VAR not used in that situation. However, Hawk-Eye, the company that uses goal-line technology came out with an apology after the game ended saying that the seven cameras they use at the ground could not pick up the ball.
The second game, on the other hand, was more entertaining with City looking to keep the title out of Liverpool's hands for this week at least. Arsenal thought they had a chance at the start of the match as Nkietye burned right past the City defence and had a chance at the City goal however the offside flag was raised. At halftime, City took the lead courtesy of a David Luiz error, and Raheem Sterling finished the move by thrashing the ball past Leno who had no chance to react and scored the first goal in the Premier League since March. The second half started off even better for City as they were given a penalty after Luiz fouled Riyad Mahrez and referee Anthony Taylor gave the penalty. Luiz was then given his marching orders, and Kevin De Bruyne made it 2-0 sending Leno the wrong way. City won the game at the end of the game thanks to Phil Foden.
However, there was a scary moment for City towards the end as the goalkeeper Ederson, and his own teammate Eric Garcia collided just outside the penalty area. It looked like a nasty injury to Garcia. At full-time Guardiola said that "he was concerned and will have to wait to see what the hospital tests say about his injuries". He also said that he was "happy about the performance of the team" and that to have "players who play 50,60 minutes is good" considering how there were concerns about match fitness after 3 months away. Meanwhile Arteta everything "had gone wrong". He said that of David Luiz's performance was that he "was honest and straightforward" and that his "opinion has not changed" despite "a difficult performance tonight".
